The aim of this book is to trace, decade by decade, the extraordinary developments of painting in France in the 19th century, from the Revolution to Impressionism. The period covered falls within two key dates corresponding to the two epoch-making canvases that open and close the sequence of illustrations: in 1784 David began the " Oath of the Horatii, " his firs; masterpiece, which excited universal interest and made Pans the headquarters of modern art; and in 1884 Seurat exhibited' his first major composition, " Bathing at Asnières, " which at once summed up and superseded Impressionism.
