Medical Instruments and Devices: Principles and Practices encompasses the broad topic of medical instruments and devices. Given the breadth of this topic, it is an impossible task to include all aspects within the confines of this medium. This book provides information on a range of instruments and devices that span not only a range of physiological systems but also span the physiological scale: from molecule to cell to organ to organ system. Each chapter provides the reader a solid foundation on the topic and offers resources for deeper investigation. I would like to acknowledge the work of the previous editor, Dr. Wolf W. von Maltzahn of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, whose editorial prowess is still clearly visible in the design of this section.

Sadly, during the writing of this edition, Dr. Leslie A. Geddes passed away at the age of 88. With BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from McGill University and a PhD in physiology fromBaylor University College of Medicine, Dr. Geddes was a pioneer in biomedical engineering and spenthis life teaching and conducting biomedical engineering research. At the time of his death, he wasthe Showalter Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Bioengineering and the former director of the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center at Purdue University. Internationally renowned, he was the recipient of numerous awards and prizes, as well as the inventor for many patents. I send my condolences to Dr. Geddes’ family; he will be missed by the entire biomedical engineering community. I am pleased to offer you his two foundational chapters on cardiac output and respiration.
